Playthrough/Reaction of the game Slide in the Woods by Jonny's Games on itch.io! Available for Linux, windows, and macOS!
I love the start screen. The sounds are really nice, and I like this colourful slide :).
Okay finding and riding a random slide in the woods would totally be me. It would trigger my appreciation of the world. Like wow... the world is so beautiful...:). It's so full of little wonders... it's so full and fleshed out... :)). Also I like how the slide also has a firefighter pole.
Okay riding the slide made me scared. It's the description of the game. I'm gonna get Got by the Gotter now... And all the ambience disappearing is *not* helping. Okay time to keep sliding on that slide now! :) I'm gonna keep sliding 'till something happens btw, so you won't hear from me for a bit.
I lied. Okay so it's greyer and there's wind wooshing sfx now. I would think it was rather beautiful if this was real life. Prediction: everytime we ride down the slide, we are entering a different dimension. In fact, we are going one dimension "down" each time, until we get to like, the Nightmare Dimension. Like fnaf world :) (except there you just get sent to Old Man Consequences). I have a feeling that next time I slide, I'll be thrown into an action scene, and be too busy running for my life to type anything.
Ooh I like the dots over the screen. I can't tell if I just hadn't noticed them until it got all dark, or if they just got here. It's reminiscent of dithering (I like dithering! I'm thinking of using it in a game of mine (if I ever make it)). It looks nice here (the whole game looks nice)!
Ough scary sound when I approached the flashlight <-- fear.
I turned the volume down when I got the flashlight, since it was a lot louder than the ambient sounds, which made me nervous there'd be a really loud jumpscare later 😭.
Ah, this newspaper supports my "putting you in another dimension" theory! Although, it mentions people went missing in a *park*, and this is merely a Slide in the Woods. So perhaps this 'park' is one of the places people were taken from, and the woods we're in is actually a pocket dimension (among many similar Woods Dimensions) where people are spat out. There is no 'beyond the woods'. But then how did our player character get here? Okay how about instead of the woods being a pocket dimension, it really is a normal place (or at least the first woods was, which I think is deifferent from the subsequent woods). You can be taken from there, but people from other dimensions can also be spat out. Like the special trees in monument mythos. The subsequent woods are not normal dimensions.
That, or the anomolous slide set teleports from place to place.
Okay this is a for-sure evil dimension now. Is it just me or do those tree leaves have eyes?
I like how you can attempt to go back up the slide from the bottom :).
Trying to spot what's different. Maybe nothing is. I think I'm going to get killed soon. Realised attempting to go up the slide eliminates all other noise.
There was a brief banging sound a few slides ago, but now it's banging constantly. Where is it? I'm gonna get killed. I think I'm seeing something when I try to go up the slide. Something black with white glitters.
Stairs are covered in blood! Promising! :D
Well okay, it's someone in a body bag banging against the railings! Oh, detective! I've found one! Can't believe I heard this guy briefly when I went down the slide a couple goes ago.
I wonder if I'm going to savagely push them down the slide (since they are in prime position), or if I'm not a freak and attempt to help them.
Still can't go down the pole <-- is stalling.
Okay something with large black hands came up from the slide and grabbed then. That was definitely what I saw when I tried to go up. I wonder if that was intentional, or if it was just where that asset was pre-loaded. I'm gonna try going up it again.
I can't see it anymore. I wonder, again, if it was intentional, or if it simply unloaded now that its animation finished. I think I'm moving a bit slower now. There's a nice 'ringing' 'song' that's playing now btw. Okay a scream sounded when I got close to the slide.
Haha why is there a crawl meter. Um. I'm definitely gonna get Got by the Gotter now. Also the extended slide was cool. The fall down was longer than usual, and then I was sliding through a tunnel instead of the red plastic. Now I'm in some tunnels.
The crawl meter works as a speed boost. That's not intimidating at all! (I'm gonna get chased 😭).
I have my volume turned way down low, so if something chases me, chances are I'm not gonna hear it haha. There'll probably be some other obvious indicator that I have to run, though, so no problem.
Girl it's over for me. I'm in the nasty yellow void dimension.
There are big metal chains at the ends of this platform. Is this whole thing suspended? I'm kinda scared I'll be jumpscared if I try going up the "slide", but my standing theory is that there are sections that are too steep to go back up, thus preventing you from backtracking *too* far. Actually I'm gonna try to go back now. Just without wearing my headphones.
Can't even get in the slide (tunel) 😭.
This body bag just rolled off the platform 😭. Idiot. (I can't fall off it, btw).
Oh you know I'm going on that podium baby. I feel like I'm gonna trigger a cutscene if I get too close, but I want to explore the area, especially since there looks to be a door on the left. But I'm also scared I'm gonna get jumpscared if I try to go through it, since I think a monster's gonna come out from there and kill me once I'm on the podium. Damn I can't believe it has that, btw. I thought it was just hungry but it's got this whole-ass RITUAL it goes through.
Door opened. Suspicious sounds. Hope I don't get jumpscared while I'm idle/typing.
Can barely see through the door from the angle I'm at. There's this big undulating THING that seems to be bound by chains. I was trying to go around the side, before, but it turns out I stopped right before I hit the barrier lol.
Better angle. The thing is *dripping*. Blue light indicates that it wants me to stand by one of the chains. I'm gonna go explore that podium since that assumendly won't push the game forward like I first thought.
Can it even reach the podium if it's chained up over there? Is there another entity?
Okay so I might need to focus, so there may not be time to type. I'll fill you in on the end if this is the case ^^.
The chained thing's not as big as I thought! I thought it was massive, but far away. Got reminded of the Scarlet King (scp). It's dripping into a hole. Doesn't seem sentient. I got tunnel vision when I stepped too close, which remained after I stepped away. It probably won't hurt me if I stand at the chain.
Second door? It seems to be the end of one of those "slides". I think I'm going to die soon. Upon closer inspection, the "thing" seems to be a large, undulating black plastic bag, which is dripping blood.
Oh it's BEATING. And I'm removing the chains.
It's beating faster now that I've removed one. Is it scared?
Oh there's *another* door that I did not see before.
Goodbye cruel world. There's one last chain, and my back is turned to the end of a slide.
Ohh. When the player character wanted to unchain the heart(?), for a moment I thought they were a little freak who knew about all this Slide Strangeness, and wanted to free it. That they were a worshipper or something. But then I was like, "Naah.. They probably want the heart(?) to plunge down the hole, in the hopes that it would die(?) and bring an end to this madness. But how the hell are they planning on getting that top chain..?"
But, no, I was right the first time. They want to "feed them" now. Who -- or *what* -- is "*them*"? I wonder if their life will be spared by this thing/things.
Okay so it was *not* a second door (second to the slide end), but a winch. The *bag* was the food, and it was lowered down. I (the character) clearly know what I'm doing. The slide cover opened up, and I was supposed to go through it. But I was waiting to see if the bag would be pulled up, and if I was in a 'rest' state where I could type, or if I needed to run. So when that face appeared in the door, I just stared at it 'til it killed me, lol. Theory: Since that face seemed human, it's actually the remains/combination of all the victims, and *it's* the hero, while we're the villains. Alternative is that we both suck. Or perhaps the player character has a good reason for doing what they did, but I doubt it.
Survived the chase scene! I think I'm gonna stop typing until the end, since I do NOT want to go through that again. I'm gonna go slide down a "normal" red slide again, though.
I was about to say "I lied" and type some commentary, but actually the game ended a few seconds after! So I keep my word :)).
Anyway, the commentary I was gonna type:
I'm back in normal-land again. Also, the slide's gone.
/commentary end.
Headcanon: The PC's helping the Slide, and this was a routine trip for them. A maintainence trip, if you will. The monster is actually the combined remains of all the victims, and thus tries to kill the pc whenever they see them, either in an attempt to slow down the rate of the killings, or to stop them entirely (maybe those creatures would starve without the pc's help).
Same dimension everytime you go down the slide, excluding the last trip, but the slide is able to affect the area around it. Or perhaps it just skips you forward through time. Either way, it takes a few slides down to get it to teleport you to the other dimension.
The slide is able to teleport between that spot in the woods and the park (or perhaps be in both locations at once). But it *is* the same world, it isn't a different dimension or anything. The pc chooses to access the slide in the woods, as opposed to in the park, because the PC's teleporting would be rather suspicious otherwise.
Of course, I believe the itch.io page said that the pc "finds" "a" slide in the woods, implying unfamiliarity, which *does* hamper this headcanon. But perhaps the pc was just being artistic with their wording. Or perhaps while the slide is always at/will go back to the park, the second place it could be changes, and it happened to be these woods this time. Or maybe the "you" in "you find a slide in the woods and decide to ride it" means *you* the *player*.
Anyway, I do admire the sort-of abruptness with which the game ends. I wish I had my volume up more, so that I could hear the bugs and other ambient sounds that I assume were playing, but the game is short enough that I could simply replay it if I desire. That, and I believe there are some videos on youtube of playthroughs I could watch (Edit: I checked, there are!).
Edit: Replayed it. That ending was very nice :3. It was surreal getting dropped off by the slide while facing back, for a moment I thought it forcibly turned the camera in the other direction. But no, I was looking at the clearing where the slide used to be. One instant, you're looking at the red tube of the slide, and in the next instant, you're looking at a field.
Also, this is unrelated, but I think it's funny how you get unceremoniously booted out of the game after flashing some credits on the screen.
Overall, I really liked this game, and it's short, so if you have some time I'd reccomend you give it a go! :)
